Six months of hard work

So the first six months of the year are gone.  How have I fared with my resolutions from the start of the year.

  • Blog once a week (at least)This is dropping off due to a couple of holidays and a lack of inspiration at times.  However, I’m hoping for a more productive July.
  • Tweet once a day (at least)If we based it on averages then I’ve been doing well – a mixture of retweets and tweets as well as some conversations – something I’m trying to actively engage in.
  • Become more patient with the kids (if they let me)Still trying hard on this one although they are increasingly cheeky and demanding. I think I will leave it as ‘Some days are better than others’
  • Make a concerted effort to reduce on the swearingI certainly see a difference but still probably way too much for my grandmother’s ears!
  • Film more family memoriesDoing well here – lots more filming (mainly iPhone) done
  • Get eldest riding a bike without stabilisershe is resisting but we will get there soon
  • Go camping at least twice (now once)done and such a success I may try to do it again and achieve my original target
  • Organise a reunion with friends from Portugal who I have not seen for 20 years Managed to do this in May when I went to Portugal
  • Become mayor of somewhere on Fourquare (my own home or workplace not included)getting back up to speed… lost a couple of mayorships but others I am fighting tooth and nail for
  • Get to Wii Fit age of 37 – last measurement was 41 but this was taken in April
  • De-clutter the house – House de-cluttering is done.  Conversely, the garage is cluttering nicely.
  • Sell something at a car boot saleDone and sold nearly £200 worth of stuff.  Still need another trip though – lots of stuff to get

  • Move house – house on the market, just waiting for the right buyer
  • Get on a Segway (easy one as a ride on one was a Xmas present, but still valid I think) – Done in February
  • (NEW) Take kids swimming on a regular basis June was not a good month for this – did not manage to go a single time, although the kids did go to the beach
  • (NEW) Read a book a monthI read a book by Dan Zevin. It was ok, but nothing great.  I have bought two new books – one by John Hegarty, the other by Derek Sivers which I got on the iPad Kindle app and am quite excited to try. I’m trying to read at least one of them but also have all of this to read through

  • (NEW) – Limit myself to a maximum of two coffees per dayDoing well here… I spent most of last week without access to an expresso, however when I got back home I had about 7 in 24hrs to make up for it.  But otherwise this is going very well.

Getting it done

We’re nearly halfway through the year and I’m not forgetting my ‘duties’ and commitments.  With that in mind, here is the latest update on my resolutions for the year.

  • Blog once a week (at least)May was a quieter month on the blogging front as family time was more important, however my average is above my aspirations
  • Tweet once a day (at least) – much like blogging, over the last two weeks this was put in the backburner as I was in Portugal
  • Become more patient with the kids (if they let me) – Kids have been surprisingly good so this has been going well. A few tests with potty training, teething and dummy removals but doing well
  • Make a concerted effort to reduce on the swearingI’m happy with my progress and I’m making a concerted effort to not swear, often stopping myself from doing so
  • Film more family memoriesdoing good with this one thanks to the trusty iPhone4 and the holiday

  • Get eldest riding a bike without stabilisers – stabilisers are off but more work is needed – not much was done in May to be honest
  • Go camping at least twice (now once) – camping trip is booked for june
  • Organise a reunion with friends from Portugal who I have not seen for 20 years Had a lunch in my old school and saw a few friends as well as seeing them accidentally

  • Become mayor of somewhere on Fourquare (my own home or workplace not included)still ‘own’ a few places but ratings have gone down a fair bit as a result of not using it whilst I was away (god, it sounds like I’m a stuck record!)
  • Get to Wii Fit age of 37 – last measurement was 41 but this was taken in April
  • De-clutter the house – House de-cluttering is done.  Conversely, the garage is cluttering nicely.
  • Sell something at a car boot saleMay 8th got rained out, so it is going to be June 5th
  • Move house house on the market, just waiting for the right buyer
  • Get on a Segway (easy one as a ride on one was a Xmas present, but still valid I think) – Done in February
  • (NEW) Take kids swimming on a regular basis going strong… took the opportunity in Portugal to get everyone swimming – both in pool and beach

  • (NEW) Read a book a monthread the Thank You Economy which was very good and highly recommended.  Will blog about it soon
  • (NEW) – Limit myself to a maximum of two coffees per day.  Broke this quite badly during the holiday.  I couldn’t help it… the coffee is much nicer, cheaper and accessible so I felt it would be doing a dis-service to not drink it

Resolutions, resolutions

Month 5 of the year and still a few things to cross off the list on the old resolutions lis

  • Blog once a week (at least) – Been doing this.  In March I blogged once every day but I’ve made a conscious decision to cut back to twice / three times a week  to give myself a bit of a breather
  • Tweet once a day (at least) – doing quite well.  I’m trying to get more involved as well when I can.  Hoping to move onto the next stage of list management
  • Become more patient with the kids (if they let me) – Patience has been tested this month.  Mia’s potty training has not gone smoothly after a promising start
  • Make a concerted effort to reduce on the swearing – Doing ok, though there are still occasions where profanities are uttered
  • Film more family memories – yes, lots of footage and photos of the kids

  • Get eldest riding a bike without stabilisers – stabilisers are off as are pedals (allegedly meant to help)
  • Go camping at least twice (now once) – booked for June
  • Organise a reunion with friends from Portugal who I have not seen for 20 years – Portugal trip planned and meet up being organised
  • Become mayor of somewhere on Fourquare (my own home or workplace not included) – 12 mayorships that include supermarket, coffee shop, DIY store, nursery and work & home
  • Get to Wii Fit age of 37 – last measurement was 41 so heading in the right direction
  • De-clutter the house – House de-cluttering in process.  Garage cluttering proceeding nicely.
  • Sell something at a car boot sale – aiming for May 8th
  • Move house – heavily reliant on ‘De-cluttering the house’ but still on the cards
  • Get on a Segway (easy one as a ride on one was a Xmas present, but still valid I think) – Done in February
  • (NEW) Take kids swimming on a regular basis – still going strong… also due to good weather we invested in a paddling pool
  • (NEW) Read a book a month – I read Brand Hijack, and have started the Thank You Economy which is looking promising
  • (NEW) – limit myself to a maximum of two coffees per day.  I’ve been following this quite well with only 2 a day although I sometimes go for a third at the weekends

1/4 of the year is gone – how am I doing with my resolutions?

We’re a quarter of the way into the year and therefore into my timeline to achieve my resolutions.

How am I doing?

  • Blog once a week (at least) – Blown this one out of the water with a blog a day in March. I’m actually going to slow down for fear of getting repetitive and allow me to do some of the other resolutions
  • Tweet once a day (at least) – been doing well on this one and have also been trying to be a bit more active than just tweeting and retweeting by conversing with @cheelau, @logbennett, @gilroyhq, @abrightnewway and @luhrsadvertising.  This is something I aim to continue doing so if you follow me and fancy a chat, I’m game
  • Become more patient with the kids (if they let me) – I’ve been doing well despite one or two hiccups
  • Make a concerted effort to reduce on the swearing – By my standards, March was a very tame month so I would consider it a success
  • Film more family memories – yes, been doing well here… April should also be a good month with lots of birthday and activities
  • Get eldest riding a bike without stabilisers – weather still not good enough
  • Go camping at least twice – I’m a fair weather camper, say no more.  I will book something though as my membership runs out in June.  Planning something in May or June so I may need to revise this one to ‘at least once’
  • Organise a reunion with friends from Portugal who I have not seen for 20 years – Portugal holiday timing will be around June so April will be the time to plan
  • Become mayor of somewhere on Fourquare/Gowalla (my own home or workplace not included) – I’ve given up on Gowalla but this week I have managed to get 5 mayorships (one is work but the others are supermarkets and coffee shops)
  • Get to Wii Fit age of 37 – not been on the Wii too much this month but have started exercising so would like to think it would have a positive effect
  • De-clutter the house – House was de-cluttered in February but quickly cluttered again.  Wife has promised to help to sort this out (she’s a hoarder) during the bank holidays we have in April
  • Sell something at a car boot sale – as above
  • Move house – heavily reliant on ‘De-cluttering the house’ but still on the cards
  • Get on a Segway (easy one as a ride on one was a Xmas present, but still valid I think) – Done in February
  • (NEW) Take kids swimming on a regular basis – we started this two weeks ago with no success, but persevered and last week was better
  • (NEW) Read a book a month – considering the only time this can happen is in the evenings I hope I’m not over-reaching.  Will try a mix of professional and non-professional books as I find to much of one or the other a bit boring after a while.  BTW, this is not 12 books in 8 months, it is 8 books in 8 months!
  • (NEW) – limit myself to a maximum of two coffees per day.  My expresso consumption has got to the point of 4 doubles a day – not good for the heart and gives me insomnia

Fingers crossed for a good April!

New Year’s resolutions – an update

As promised, I thought I would keep you up to date on my progress with New Year’s resolutions.

I think a report card would say ‘Overall could do better, but easily distracted by other things.  When he puts the effort in, the results are there but at times his head appears to be more in the clouds’

So here we go with the update:

  • Blog once a week (at least) – nailing this one with 17 posts so far this year
  • Tweet once a day (at least) – doing relatively well on this front as well but I will admit to having missed a few
  • Become more patient with the kids (if they let me) – doing ok here but I won’t go into the reasons why
  • Make a concerted effort to reduce on the swearing – I have made an effort and I think I am doing better than last year but there have been days where all my good work has been smashed to pieces
  • Film more family memories – not done much on this front (must do better)
  • Get eldest riding a bike without stabilisers – I’m blaming this on the weather, you need to have a concerted go at this and at the moment the weather is not our friend
  • Go camping at least twice – I’m a fair weather camper, say no more.
  • Organise a reunion with friends from Portugal who I have not seen for 20 years – not even thought about this one or when I’m going to Portugal
  • Become mayor of somewhere on Fourquare/Gowalla (my own home or workplace not included) – Doing better on Gowalla than Foursquare (a sign of Gowalla’s popularity in the UK?).  I’m the leader at the Chineham Tesco and Costa on Gowalla
  • Get to Wii Fit age of 37 – haven’t begun my training regime and been too scared to see what my current age is… maybe this weekend?
  • Declutter the house – Feb/Mar will be the time this happens
  • Sell something at a car boot sale – as above
  • Move house – heavily reliant on ‘Decluttering the house’ but still on the cards
  • Get on a Segway (easy one as a ride on one was a Xmas present, but still valid I think) – 2 weeks until this one can be struck off the list – whooop whooop!

New update in early March!
