We often hear about the fact that the devil is in the detail – and it so often is. But Van Halen took that to new extremes in their tours, with the rather extravagant request on their rider for a bowl of M&Ms with all the brown ones removed. And if any were left, then all hell would break loose.
Now this may seem like rock n roll gone mad, but the reality is that this seemingly trivial request actually played a much more practical role – to ensure that venues were fulfilling their responsibilities when putting on a Van Halen show. If venues couldn’t handle this simple request, how could they possibly manage the smooth running and safety of a show?
David Lee Roth goes into more detail here:
So, sweat the small stuff – it can do more damage than it’s size would hint at.
